Mary Kennedy’s Death Attributed to Hanging

Mary Richardson Kennedy, the wife of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., died of asphyxiation by hanging, reports the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s office.

Her body was found Wednesday in an outbuilding on the couple’s property in Bedford, N.Y. The death has not been officially ruled a suicide, but sources told ABC News that Kennedy apparently killed herself. Her death marked the final event in a life that had turned tumultuous of late and adds yet another dark moment in the Kennedy family’s history.

Psychologists said events in Kennedy’s recent history, such as reports of alcohol and drug abuse and psychiatric problems, pointed to an increased risk of suicide.

“When these things come to together in just the wrong way, they can really put someone at greater risk of suicide,” said Dr. Ken Robbins, a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin.

Psychologists say problems with alcohol and drugs were one of the most common factors that increase a person’s risk of suicide. Robbins said about 90 percent of people who commit suicide had a history of substance abuse and a record of psychiatric illness, usually depression.

“When it [depression] is combined with alcohol in particular, it increases the risk of suicide dramatically because of the disinhibiting effects of alcohol. It becomes much harder to talk yourself down from the suicidal thoughts,” Robbins said.

Kennedy, 52, had four children with her husband, the son of Ethel Kennedy and Sen. Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968. Mary Richardson Kennedy and Robert Kennedy Jr. had been married for 16 years. In 2010, the New York Post reported that Mary Richardson Kennedy had been at the center of several disturbing episodes.

In September 2007, the Westchester Journal News reported that Robert F. Kennedy Jr., worried about his wife’s mental state, had tried to drive her to a psychologist’s office. She resisted and ran from the car into the road, according to police reports.

The couple filed for divorce in 2010, a day after police had been called to the couple’s Bedford home in response to a “domestic incident” during which Mary Kennedy was allegedly intoxicated, according to the Westchester Journal News. She claimed that her husband had been verbally abusive to her and her children.

Three days later, she was charged with driving under the influence after she ran the family’s station wagon over a curb outside a school near their home, the newspaper reported.

In August 2010, she was arrested again for driving under the influence of drugs, according to the Associated Press.

It’s difficult to tease out how Kennedy’s relationship with her husband and the Kennedy family may have exacerbated her problems. The Kennedy clan is historically a close-knit group, united particularly by the series of tragedies that have haunted them, such as the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy, Sen. Edward Kennedy’s involvement in a car crash on the small island of Chappaquiddick that killed a young woman, and the deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, in a plane crash in 1999.

Strong social support is one factor that can reduce a person’s risk suicide, even if they are facing a number of other stressors. But family violence or discord can do just the opposite, particularly if the person is struggling psychologically, psychologists say.

Half-Life: Opposing Force Is Still a Great Game, Even 13 Years Later

Posted: 16 May 2012 02:46 PM PDT

Who here has fond memories of playing Half-Life and it’s expansions? I do. A little while ago, I decided to start up Opposing Force, the expansion from Gearbox where you play as a soldier that shows up at Black Mesa. I expected that I would simply play though the “boot camp” tutorial level again, and then be done. But before I knew it, I had begun a new game and was playing through it.

HBT: Cubs patriarch wants to get rid of Obama

Remember Joe Ricketts? He?s the patriarch of the Ricketts family which owns the Chicago Cubs. His son Tom runs the team, but old Joe?s fortune ? made founding Ameritrade ? is what built the family?s?nest egg.

As we?ve noted before, Joe Ricketts is quite the political activist. He is the founder and leader of an anti-government spending group called ?Ending Spending.? Never mind that his family business asked for and received millions for a new spring training facility in Arizona and continues to ask for tax dollars to renovate Wrigley Field. He?s really, really against spending. At least spending that benefits people other than himself and his family.

But now he?s branched out and is bankrolling efforts aimed directly at unseating President Obama. ?Which is fine as far as it goes, but as the New York Times notes today, the kind of rhetoric he?s bankrolling is ? interesting:

The $10 million plan, one of several being studied by Mr. Ricketts, includes preparations for how to respond to the charges of race-baiting it envisions if it highlights Mr. Obama?s former ties to Mr. Wright, who espouses what is known as ?black liberation theology.?

The group suggested hiring as a spokesman an ?extremely literate conservative African-American? who can argue that Mr. Obama misled the nation by presenting himself as what the proposal calls a ?metrosexual, black Abe Lincoln.

Theory: if you specify that you need a ?literate? black person ? like you need to specify that you don?t want one of those many illiterate ones ? you probably do need to ?respond to charges of race-baiting,? because you probably are engaging in a bunch of racist baloney.

Anyway, it?s an interesting article. And a reminder that the patriarch of the Chicago Cubs is going to spend millions of his money to make people believe that Obama is an extreme radical black man out to undermine the American Way. If that?s something you believe, great. If not, perhaps a literate black man will change your mind.

Oh, and Joe: have you paid for Shawon Dunston?s college education yet? You don?t want him to be illiterate, do you?

Face-sook: an open secret? | The Hand

Posted by The Hand on May 17, 2012 in Relationships |

Woman on a laptop, computer, online, shopping, social media, facebook.

Giving too much away ? did your friends know about the break-up before you did?

We?ve all been witness to it, a relationship that you realise is going to end before the individuals themselves seem to know. This has only gotten easier with Facebook. You notice your friend?s status updates turning more personal and embittered, and then, after a few more weeks of passive-aggressive over-sharing, ?Sally is single? suddenly crops up on your feed.

Back in the day, you would receive word of a troubled relationship one-on-one via a teary telephone call or on your couch after a shared bottle of wine. Now people are turning to social media in growing numbers, publically purging themselves of relationship anxieties as if every one of their contacts is a friend in the traditional sense. Which often just exacerbates the problem.

?My policy is to never be negative on a social networking platform. There is so much scope for interpretation when we write a text only post, and meanings can be misconstrued,? said Nicole Greentree, CEO and founder of Empower Social Media. ?With more and more conversations being had online and in public forums, a level of etiquette should be adhered to. There will always be those that like to have a Face-sook, but I don?t believe it?s of any value. Even if it is in a private group, there is always a chance that someone can do a screen capture of your comment and spread it through their networks.?

Beyond providing a cringe-worthy international platform for you to air your dirty laundry, the way you navigate social media can also have unintended consequences ? especially when it comes to couples with children.

?The big thing that we?re finding in our mediation programs is that the kids are reading those posts,? said Relationship Australia Victoria spokesperson Sue Yorston. ?We?ve had some very distressed children because their mum and dad might think that the kids don?t know what?s going on and are not affected by it. We know that they are. People don?t seem to realise that when you use these sites in this way it?s out in the ether forever.?

Social media itself can also be the root cause of the problem. A recent survey by Relationships Australia, headed by Yorston, showed that an increasing number of people are reporting issues surrounding the use of social media and related technology in counselling sessions. A total of 120 practitioners took part in the questionnaire and 80 per cent reported seeing clients who cited the impact of Facebook on their relationship as a primary concern.

?The idea of this survey came about because our practitioners started getting people coming in who were saying a major issue in their relationship is the use of social media,? said Yorston. ?There?s been a lot of discussion around virtual affairs. Years ago we would have talked about people suddenly working back late. Now a flag is raised when someone walks into a room and their partner?s laptop is quickly closed.?

While the possibility of reconnecting with old flames via Facebook or Twitter has seen a rise in the number of people pursuing extramarital affairs, at least anecdotally, the connection doesn?t need to be physical for it to cause conflict.

?There?s a lack of understanding around the idea of engaging with somebody on Facebook. An individual might not feel as if they?re having an affair and it has nothing to do with their real relationship. But for the person that?s excluded, there are issues around trust and feeling violated,? she said. ?Whether the affair is real, as in physical, or virtual, its impact on the relationship is as devastating in each situation. If you?re looking at the emotional investment in that virtual affair, it?s taking from the other person?s relationship. It?s emotional cheating.?

Part of the appeal, says Yorston, comes down to control. In the case of reconnecting with an ex or old friend, not only do we tend to focus on pleasant memories and discard the bad, we have an opportunity to present ourselves in the best possible light.

?The relationship is one-dimensional,? she said. ?This other person isn?t seeing you getting up in the morning all grumpy or coming home and kicking the cat because you had a bad day or someone spent the credit card money. An online relationship is what you want it to be. That can be quite enticing.?

Yorston says the best way to prevent social media from becoming an issue in a relationship is to refrain from making your private fights public and conduct yourself in a transparent way. While some couples share passwords to avoid temptation, those who prefer a healthy dose of autonomy should look at their behaviour objectively if they think they?ve crossed a line.

?If you have something on your computer that you want to keep from someone then that?s a challenge for you,? she said. ?Look at why that?s there and ask yourself, What am I doing here? If you wouldn?t be comfortable with your partner looking at it then maybe that?s a bit of a flag for you.?

Keep it together

Nicole Greentree, CEO and founder of Empower Social Media, shares some tips to take into consideration when mixing relationships and social media:

* Be open with your partner about who you are networking with.

* Be respectful to your partner and spend quality time together, without having to update your status.

* Discuss with your partner whether they are comfortable if you share information about them, including their name, photos, activities etc.

* Don?t keep secrets from your partner and express them online. It is a public space, and it?s likely they will find out.

How Anne Germanacos Became a Writer ? ph.d. in creative writing

As writers, we live double lives: lived once in the world of others, and again, in the quiet of our own minds. It takes a certain amount of will and courage to leave with regularity the circle of humanity in order to enact a kind of theft, which is one aspect of what the writing life seems to be.

Anne Germanacos is the author of the short story collection In the Time of Girls (BOA Editions). Born in San Francisco, she has lived in Greece for over thirty years. Together with her husband, Nick Germanacos, she ran the Ithaka Cultural Studies Program on the islands of Kalymnos and Crete, and taught writing, literature, and Modern Greek. She holds an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars. Her work has appeared in over sixty literary reviews and anthologies, including Dzanc?s Best of the Web 2009. She and her husband have four children and five grandchildren. They live on Crete and in San Francisco.

How Anne Germanacos Became a Writer

This is the next installment in the How to Become a Writer interview series, which will post here at Ph.D. in Creative Writing every other Sunday until I run out of writers to interview, or until they stop saying yes. Each writer answers the same 5 questions. Thanks to Anne for saying yes!

1. ?Why did you want to become a writer?

Writing brought the world into a different focus while conferring something that felt like a secret, additional self.

The desire began with this revelation of clarity, difference, separateness and power. (I?m sure my receptivity to the revelation was encouraged by need.)

Writing offered another body (in words) that could hold the many shifting parts, adding new ones when they occurred. It allowed me to go my own way, holding out the possibility even in situations that required me to go against my own grain.

2. ?How did you go about becoming a writer?

I became a writer by writing every day, creating, rewriting, sometimes destroying in order to make space for something new.

As writers, we live double lives: lived once in the world of others, and again, in the quiet of our own minds. It takes a certain amount of will and courage to leave with regularity the circle of humanity in order to enact a kind of theft, which is one aspect of what the writing life seems to be.

If we steal in the right way?from ourselves and the world?we may fashion (and be rewarded with) a gift. I love the ecology of writing, the way it turns nothing into something, generally without too much damage to the environment.

Painting by Belinda Bryce

My writing is in constant (often unconscious) conversation with the books I read. Writing for many years without an audience, reading gave me a sense of the human community we?re all a part of, and written companions. It made me want to write something worthy of that conversation.

More than anything, though, it?s likely I became a writer by a certain act of daring: I left home at seventeen to live in another country, married and had children young, taught, and wrote. I?m sure it was the desire to be a writer?to make a life that would nourish and replenish me as a writer?that allowed me to make such a bold decision. Being in love didn?t hurt, either.

3. ?Who helped you along the way, and how?

When I was 12, a teacher encouraged me to write daily, and because I was a little in love with him, I did. The next teacher who responded to my writing returned my love, and so we?ve been married for many years. Having someone by my side who never faltered in supporting my desire to write helped tremendously to create, if not smooth, the path. (There is no smooth path to becoming a writer.)

Painting by Belinda Bryce

My children required me to be strong enough to be both a mother and a writer. In order to teach, I had to read carefully and find ways of conveying a passion for language to young people who were sometimes more interested in other endeavors. Sometimes, though, the intensity of their focus made class worthy of a story!

Graduate school gave me fine teachers, a sympathetic audience and wonderful, supportive writing friends. This community was both preparation for and launch toward the book that would garner a small audience.

4. ?Can you tell me about a writer or artist whose biography inspires you?

Rather than looking to a particular writer or artist?s biography, I take inspiration from any life along the way and hold my life against any number of lives, measuring, to know how far I have to go, as a person first, always, because without the primacy of the life?both lived and imagined?there?s no story.

I recently read a biography of the artist Joan Mitchell and was fascinated by the descriptions of the way she saw?she had an eidetic memory and synesthesia, to boot! It sometimes helps me to understand the way I move through space and time, trying to make something of it, by stepping away from words toward another medium, and one I don?t work in.

I recently read a biography of the artist Joan Mitchell and was fascinated by the descriptions of the way she saw?she had an eidetic memory and synesthesia, to boot!

I admire the work of Homer, Padgett Powell, WG Sebald, Geoff Dyer, Isaac Babel. Grace Paley, Adam Phillips, Anne Carson. David Markson, David Malouf. Virginia Woolf, Emily Dickinson. I could go on.

The work they produced against their days helps sustain me?as a human being and a writer. Also, some of these writers have created works that seem to lend validity to certain less conventional aspects of my own writing.

I know that doesn?t exactly answer the question. I guess I?m resistant!

5. ?What would you say in a short letter to an aspiring writer?

Minimize doubt. Find a way?a method, a trick, a psychological tic to dissolve doubt?s potency. You will most likely always be working alongside it, so best to have some useful way of repelling it. I write against it, a little like diving into a cold pool of water?scary but invigorating. Generally, it does the trick. But if that doesn?t work, get up and do something else. Forget about it for a while.

Be gentle with yourself?you will find so many reasons not to be. But it?s most likely your kindness toward yourself (I?m not saying self-indulgence) that will help you alongside the rigors of constant, daily writing.

I can?t speak to a practice that is anything less than daily. It?s the only one I know, so it?s the one I peddle.

By writing daily, you make it your life.

And one more thing: publication is the icing on the cake. The act of writing itself gives you a way to be in the world and is its own reward. Publication just makes it okay, finally, to actually mention that you?re a writer.
